Gable frames are available in many different, strange and attractive designs, the most popular ones being a plain gable with vertical mullions and of course the sunburst design.

The original sunburst design which is still used on many Gable Front conservatories consisted of shaped glass units with integral Georgian bars forming the arch and spokes, but the most modern version, which looks far more attractive is achieved by using PVCu profiles to form the arch and spokes.

This version involves longer manufacturing times and requires profile bending, which also increases it’s cost compared to the older Georgian bar version which is fine if cost is an issue, such as with DIY conservatories.

There are also different methods of manufacture, depending on the manufacturer’s and consumer’s preferences. These include blunt or pointed corners. Pointed corners tend to be more difficult to weld and blunt corners require infill pieces to finish. See the image on the left.

Other variations in the manufacture of Gable Front conservatories include running a ring beam across the front which helps improve structural integrity, however this often means having to run guttering across the front also which can look unsightly.

This can be overcome by omitting the front ring beam and fitting a heavy duty aluminium butt joint or curtain walling material in it’s place.

There are a couple of interesting videos showing the manufacture of gable frames and the profile bending process which are well worth watching.

Most conservatory installers outsource the manufacture of their gable frames, particularly the ones that incorporate profile bending as it is a specialist and time consuming operation, making it uneconomical to manufacture them their selves.

Most companies that manufacture gable frames normally stock a selection of different PVCu profiles for the frames and profile bending, eliminating the need for conservatory suppliers to send them their profiles.
